Description
Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a shrub from the Rosaceae family, native to Western North America. It produces dark purple berries in abundance (if you can beat the birds..). They taste a bit like blueberries with a marzipan hint – yummy.
They are extremely cold tolerant handling -25C with ease, and can handle most types of soil. They apparently fruit best in areas that don’t get too hot, so probably not worth growing in the warmest parts of NZ (possibly due to chill hours).
Seeds per packet: 10
Germination Instructions
Seeds should be soaked on receipt for a few days, before cold stratifying in the fridge for 3 months in damp sand/perlite. After that time, bring outside and plant into pots.
