Description
European sweet chestnut is one of the tastiest and most versatile nut crops. It is a starchy nut that can be roasted or fried directly, ground into flour or even blended into a cream.
Most sweet chestnuts in New Zealand that have been planted in the last few decades years are hybrids with Japanese chestnuts (Castanea crenata), such as the most commonly grafted chestnut variety ‘1005’. These hybrids grow well and produce large sized nuts, but they are not as sweet or tasty as the pure European sweet chestnut.
These seeds come from 100 year old pure European sweet chestnut trees in Reefton. These trees have proven to fruit excellently in a wet climate as well as tolerate wetter soils, so are great genetics to plant out.

Germination Instructions
Sweet chestnut seeds are easy to sprout if you directly sow them into pots and leave them outside exposed over Winter, however if you have lots of rodents then it’s probably better to do the cold stratification indoors.
To cold stratify indoors keep the seeds in damp sand/perlite in the fridge for at least 90 days, before planting outside. They will sprout in a few weeks.
