Description
Red banana passionfruit, also known as vanilla passionfruit (despite having nothing to do with vanilla) is a beautiful passionfruit that is native to the cloud forests of South America. The flowers are a scarlet red, and look beautiful. It’s normally pollinated by hummingbirds, which are not found in New Zealand, so hand-pollination can give better fruit set.
The fruit taste most similar to banana passionfruit, but are nowhere near as invasive and so safe to plant in most places. The fruit can hang on the plant over Winter, ripening in the following Spring and Summer.
The plant grows best with its roots in the shade and the ability to climb into the sunlight.
Seeds per packet: 10
Germination Instructions
Pour warm water over the seeds and soak for 24 hours until swollen (repeating this step if necessary), then sow and keep warm. Passionfruit seeds can germinate after years being in the soil (we recently found some that must’ve been outside for over a year before sprouting).
