Description
Sweet granadilla is a passion fruit from medium elevations in South America. The fruit when ripe has golden coloured skin and is slightly sweeter than black passion fruit, but is otherwise similar. The plant can withstand about -1º C of frost, give or take.
We have actually grown a sweet granadilla outside on the West coast, where it survived over Winter without any frost protection (other than being sheltered by nearby trees). We have seen very healthy sweet granadilla in Nelson, but so far it seemed reluctant to flower and fruit.
The seeds are from the US 2021 season.
Seeds per packet: 5
Germination Instructions
The seeds are small and hard, and benefit from an overnight soak. We have been recommended to soak them in double-strength black tea, as this can stimulate germination. Reportedly soaking them in the juice of a fresh passion fruit will help the seeds to germinate. For fastest germination – maintain them above 20º C and they should germinate within 2-3 weeks. Sow them near to the surface in a free-draining soil in small pots.
