Description
Karna Khatta hybrid (Citrus aurantium) is an old Indian Citrus variety, believed to be a sour orange type hybrid. It may contain some citron parentage as well.
As a rootstock, Karna Khatta was at one point the second most important rootstock in India. It’s probably intermediate in performance to sour orange / rough lemon.
As a fruit, Karna Khatta are very sour, and can be used as a lemon, or to make a high quality marmalade.
Karna Khatta hybrid seeds are highly polyembryonic, so almost all seedlings will be the exact Karna Khatta hybrid variety, with few off-types. See our article on Nucellar embryony for further explanation.
