Description

Jeruk limau (Citrus hystrix x Citrus reticulata), also known as Indonesian lime or nasnaran, is a wild Citrus native to Southeast Asia. It’s also sometimes known as the ‘orange lime’. The hybrid formula refers to a hybrid between a papeda mother and a mandarin father. In warmer climates the outside of the fruit will remain green while the inside ripens to an orange colour, however in New Zealand it’s likely the outside of the fruit will ripen to orange due to our colder climate.

Jeruk limau is occasionally used as a rootstock as well (usually under the name nasnaran), where it performs reasonably well.

Jeruk limau fruit are known to be very tasty and to make excellent drinks. They can be used in cooking as well such as in the dish sambal. They are aromatic, juicy and sour.

Jeruk limau seeds are highly polyembryonic, so almost all seedlings will be the exact Jeruk limau variety, with few off-types. See our article on Nucellar embryony for further explanation.
