Japanese plum yew is a slow-growing evergreen conifer with raspberry-sized fruit that taste like butterscotch (with a hint of pine!). They are best eaten by pinching a hole in the skin, and squeezing the juice into your mouth.
They are likely to only grow to 2 metres tall after a number of decades, and can fruit in partial shade, so could be used for an understorey crop. They are much more popular as a forest garden crop in Europe than in New Zealand (at the moment anyway).
The plants were grown from some excellent tasting New Zealand plants that tasted as good as any of the varieties I have tasted overseas.
