Description
C35 is a hybrid rootstock with trifoliata and a Ruby blood orange as parents, bred by the University of California and released in 1987. It is evergreen (unlike trifoliata, which is deciduous) which enables it to have a longer growing season. It trades of this longer growing season by being slightly less frost tolerant than trifoliata, and having slightly more incompatibility with certain scion varieties.
The fruit are very sour, as sour as a lemon. But it’s the incredible bitterness and extremely unusual medicinal flavour that make this fruit hard to use. 99% of people should grow this purely as a high performance Citrus rootstock or rare Citrus ornamental. For those 1% of people, it will make an incredibly bitter marmalade that tastes like someone mixed medicine into already bitter marmalade. Citrus trifoliata fruits have been used for thousands of years in Asia as medicine, so maybe there’s some benefits.
C35 seeds are highly polyembryonic which means that a large majority of seedlings will be apomictic [=true] clones of the C35 citrange.
Seeds per packet: 5
Germination Instructions
The seeds will arrive in damp perlite. Plant the seeds directly into a seed raising mix, and keep warm, and they will easily sprout. For fresh Citrus seeds, you can expect 90%+ germination.
