Description

These American pawpaw seeds come from 2nd generation New Zealand plants (so the seeds would produce the 3rd generation). They have been selected over time to fruit well in the New Zealand climate, which is less hot in Summer and less cold in Winter than its native range. These plants once mature can handle -25C so are suitable to grow in the coldest parts of New Zealand.

In terms of soil requirements, Asimina triloba prefers free-draining soils that are deep (as they are heavily taprooted) and rich. They have been grown and fruited in many areas of NZ (e.g. Auckland, Waikato, Manawatu, Nelson – to name a few). Not many of these plants are self-fertile, so best to plant a few.

Seeds per packet: 5

Germination Instructions

The seeds need to be cold-stratified for 3 months, so keep them in the fridge unless you live somewhere with cold Winters. After the 3 months you can plant them outside where they’ll continue to cold stratify until germinating naturally in Spring, or you can germinate them inside, or you can keep them in the fridge until planting out during Spring.
