Description

Yunnan banana (Musa yunnanensis var yunnanensis), also known as wild forest banana, is a wild species of banana native to Yunnan in Southern China. It is shade and frost tolerant and likely to be one of the hardiest banana species currently in New Zealand, although it is also very rare so it has not been trialled.

Yunnan banana produces bunches of upwards pointing fruit, that have a very aromatic tropical / berry smell, smelling much better than the banana varieties common to NZ. Unfortunately the fruit are full of seeds so difficult to actually eat any of this small quantity of great smelling banana flesh.

These seeds were sourced from South island Yunnan banana fruit, and we will eventually have plants available for sale.

Seeds per packet: 10

Germination Instructions

Banana seeds should be soaked in warm water for a few days (changing the water once a day), and then placed into a damp but not waterlogged potting mix, and then kept warm. Alternating temperatures seem best rather than constant heat. Banana seeds can take from weeks to almost a year to germinate, and although various techniques such as nicking the seeds and gibberellic acid application can be used, the sprouting seems inherently erratic.
