Description

Carob is a small evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean and Middle East. Requires a sunny site with free-draining soil. May or may not be a nitrogen fixer (the research is conflicting) – but it’s not a very fast growing tree anyway. The tree produces pods that when ripened, can be ground into carob powder (sometimes used as a cocoa substitute)- the hard seeds can also be processed into carob gum.

Carob has proven tricky to fruit in New Zealand, with pollination problems causing a lack of pods in some regions. These seeds come from trees growing and fruiting outside in Nelson, New Zealand which should give a higher chance of fruiting seedlings than imported seeds.

Seeds per packet: 10

Germination Instructions

Pour hot water over the seeds and soak for 24 hours until swollen (repeating this step if necessary), then sow and keep warm.
