Description

Cox citrandarin (Citrus reticulata x trifoliata) is an Australian hybrid  between a Scarlet mandarin x trifoliata. Scarlet is an edible mandarin that was grown commercially for many decades in Australia. It was bred in NSW by J Cox as part of a breeding program conducted from the late 1950s through to the late 1970s to find better rootstocks for lemons and mandarins (as trifoliata has incompatibility problems with some lemons, such as Eureka). Cox
was first released to Australian Citrus industry in 1995 for use as a rootstock for Eureka lemon.

As a rootstock, Cox is resistant to Citrus nematodes, and Phytophthora root and collar rots. It has some benching problems when grown with mandarins. It is likely to be cold hardy to approximately -15 degrees Celsius if grown on its own roots, so would be a good option for cold hardy Citrus fruit in New Zealand.

There are no taste reports for Cox citrandarin, but given that citrandarins (mandarin x trifoliata) are known to be amongst the most edible F1 trifoliata hybrids, and that the female parent was a sweet mandarin – it might be better than the taste of Furr C-57 – see taste report here: Furr C-57 Citrandarin (Citrus reticulata x trifoliata)

Cox citrandarin seeds are highly polyembryonic, so almost all seedlings will be the exact Cox citrandarin variety, with few off-types. See our article on Nucellar embryony for further explanation.
